A letter from Tristram Cary — pioneer of electronic and experimental music — to Giles 'Denmark' Mitchell.
In 1973, in my last year of the DipAD in Fine Art — having been working in electronic art, music and installation, and having bought a Synthi A to work with at home — I was looking for places to continue my experimental and electronic music. I visited Cardiff that year, where there was a studio of electronic music. I wrote to John Cage and to Tristram Cary, the British-Australian composer, for ideas on where and how to continue. At Trent Polytechnic I went to various lectures and classes on contemporary experimental music, and had a visiting tutor, Michael Nyman, who came frequently. In 1974 I went to the Slade School of Art, where I experimented in electronic music and computer art.
